Peter Kerr Mary Peters Trust Award Winner

Local student tees his way to success

Student and sportsman, Peter Kerr, 19, from Antrim’s North Coast, has been awarded the Rainbow Sporting Award from the Mary Peters Trust.

Together with the support of Northern Ireland’s largest independent telecoms provider, the Trust deliver bursaries to financially aid promising sports stars across the province.

As Portrush Golf Club’s youngest ever member, Peter started his promising career at only 10 years old, winning the Irish U18s 2015 season, his biggest achievement to date. This summer Peter became the leading qualifier at the AIG Irish Amateur Close.

Speaking about the importance of the funding, Peter said:

“From the age of 6, golf has always been a massive part of my life. I have inherited the love of the sport from my dad who has also played from a young age.  I enjoy the competitiveness of the sport and the feeling of being part of a team, this ultimately drives my ambition to succeed.

“The funding and support from the Mary Peters Trust is essential in helping me buy new clubs, equipment and coaching sessions which enable me to continue entering tournaments across Ireland. The resources will assist my training on becoming part of the Irish Men’s squad where I am currently on the 2nds and eventually competing in international championships.”

Stuart Carson of Rainbow Communications, said:

“Peter’s determination, passion and eagerness makes us extremely proud to support this committed sport star of the future and we relish the opportunity to be part of his journey to success as he strives for greatness. We have no doubt that Peter will continue to progress as a leading international golf player and in the future, as he reaches his goal of representing Ireland.”

Whilst studying Chemistry at St. Andrew’s University, Peter trains three times a week during term time and attends sessions with a professional coach once a month. Peter’s dream is to represent Ireland at senior level in international competitions and European championships.

Dame Mary Peters said:

“Golf is a massive part of our sporting culture in Northern Ireland and across the island of Ireland, especially with The Open coming to Peter’s club, Portrush Golf Club, in 2019. The sport is well represented with both males and females of all ages and it is exciting to see the popularity of the sport grow.

“I am grateful for the continued support that Rainbow Communications gives to the Trust and in turn how this is helping our young athletes achieve their dreams and progress as sports people. Our sponsors enable us to provide essential support to our sports people in developing their career path.”
