The Mary Peters’ Trust, in partnership with Rainbow Communications, is delighted to announce Cookstown’s own Claire McCammon as the latest recipient of its much sought-after Rainbow Communications Sporting Award.
A keen and talented netball player, Claire, 19, has been interested in the sport since the age of seven. Her mother used to play and coached Claire’s primary school’s netball team when Claire decided to join in with her sister, six years her senior, and has barely put the ball down since!
This fresh injection of valuable funding from Rainbow, NI’s largest independent telecoms provider, will go towards the development of Claire’s training schedule, the purchasing of kit and equipment.
It also helped fund Claire’s travel to the Netball World Youth Championships in Botswana last July. After making it through to the fourth round, the team narrowly lost to Barbados with only 12 points in it.
“This has been a really exciting few months for me as my career in netball develops. Between playing with the U21 squad at the World Youth Championships and this hugely generous award from Rainbow and the Mary Peters’ Trust, I am really excited about the next stage and where it could take me.”
The university student continues to train every weekend with her squad ahead of the upcoming European Open Championships.
Stuart Carson, Sales and Marketing Director at Rainbow, said;
“We are delighted that Rainbow can support Claire’s exciting career in her chosen sport with some well-deserved funds. We look forward to watching her progress and we wish her and the team the best of luck in all their future endeavours and tournaments.”
In addition to graduating from her university course, Claire’s long-term goals include participating at both World and Commonwealth games in the near future.
Mary Peters said;
“Netball continues to grow in popularity and influence girls of all ages and it is so exciting and encouraging to see the Northern Ireland team so well represented at these international competitions.
“I am delighted that the Trust, together with Rainbow, can help Claire realise her dreams and pursue the highest echelons of success in the sport.”
